Some of my readers have received emails from Amazon to let them know that my book Carmela and Pepe (the two versions: Spanish and English) was available for purchase. I published it last July 16, my mother’s Saint Day. I notified no one. It is such an extraordinary memoir! I left it adrift in the ocean of books to be discovered by chance. I wanted to surprise the readers with a beautiful story. I did not expect Amazon would notify anyone.
Here is an introduction:
The book CARMELA AND PEPE relates the lives of two young individuals who formed a modest couple in the mid-20th century. They fought relentlessly to survive the harsh years of the Spanish Civil War, the hardships of the post-war period, and the pervasive melancholy and injustice that plagued the Spanish society in the following decades. But their unwavering love for each other sustained them. I wrote the book at the request of my mother, Carmela. Upon finishing it, I read the narrative. My parents’ experiences came to life, and their closely guarded family secrets stood out, uncovered for everyone to see. I then questioned whether I should share those intimate details with my readers. After a long contemplation, I decided to trust them with their memories. The book tells beautiful stories and sheds light on a little-known era in Spain, as fascist Franco’s dictatorship silenced any dissenters of his regime.
